Power Backup Solutions in detail

About this service

Power interruptions cost Kenyan households and businesses time, money and productivity. Wave Fiber Technologies designs and installs power backup systems, from automatic standby generators to solar backup systems, that keep your lights, security systems, internet and essential equipment running when the grid goes down.

Generator installation

Standby and automatic generators sized correctly for your home or business load, installed with proper wiring, ventilation and safety cutoffs. We size every generator installation around your actual power needs, avoiding the common mistake of an undersized or oversized unit.

Solar backup power systems

Solar power installation designed for backup during outages, or as a way to reduce your monthly electricity bill. We design solar systems around your household or business consumption, with battery storage that keeps essential circuits running when the grid is down.

Transmission equipment and fibre distribution panels in a rack

Backup batteries and UPS systems

For properties that need instant, silent backup for sensitive equipment such as routers, computers, alarm panels and CCTV systems, we install battery backup and UPS solutions that bridge the gap the moment power is lost.

Generator fuel management and monitoring

Fuel level monitoring, consumption reporting and theft detection for standby generators, for sites where the fuel bill is significant and nobody can say precisely where it goes.

Questions, pricing and support

How do you decide what size generator I need?

The load assessment lists everything you want to stay powered, lights, a fridge, a borehole pump, air conditioning, and sizes the generator to carry that load with margin for the heaviest item starting up, rather than guessing from the size of the building.

Does the generator need regular servicing even if the power rarely goes out?

Yes, if anything more so. A generator that never runs is the one most likely to fail to start when it is finally needed, which is why servicing includes a load test rather than just an oil change.

Is it safe to run a generator during heavy rain?

A generator installed with the correct enclosure and ventilation for outdoor use is designed to run through normal weather, which is part of what the installation is specified for rather than left to the unit itself to handle.

How long can the battery run my essential circuits during an outage?

That depends on the battery capacity chosen and what is on the essential circuit, which we agree with you at the site assessment. A system sized for lights, routers and security equipment runs considerably longer than one also carrying an air conditioner or a borehole pump.

Do I need to replace the battery on a fixed schedule?

Batteries degrade gradually with use rather than failing on a fixed date, and the monitoring set up at handover shows you that decline over time, so replacement is planned around actual performance rather than guessed at.

Can a hybrid system reduce my electricity bill even without an outage?

Yes, that is a separate benefit from backup: a hybrid system draws from solar first during the day, which reduces what you pull from the grid whether or not the grid is actually down.

How is this different from a generator or solar backup?

Speed and scale. A UPS switches over instantly with zero interruption, which a generator and even a solar hybrid cannot quite match, but it is sized for a small, critical load rather than a whole building. Most sites with a generator or solar backup still run a UPS on top of it for exactly the equipment that cannot tolerate even a brief gap.

How long does a UPS actually last during an outage?

It depends entirely on the battery capacity against the load connected to it, which is why we draw up a load list before sizing it. A UPS running only a router and a CCTV recorder lasts considerably longer than one also carrying a desktop computer and monitor.

Does the battery need replacing even if it is never used?

Yes, UPS batteries degrade with age regardless of use, typically over a few years, and we tell you what to expect at handover so replacement is planned rather than a surprise the next time the power actually fails.

Will this tell me if fuel is being stolen?

It shows the tank level falling when the generator is not running, with a timestamp. That is the evidence that is otherwise impossible to obtain, and it is usually what prompts sites to install monitoring in the first place.

Does it work with our existing generator?

The monitoring is fitted to the tank rather than to the generator, so it works with most installations regardless of make or age. The survey confirms the tank can take a sensor and which type suits its shape.

Can we see the readings without being on site?

Yes, levels and alerts are available remotely, which is the point for anyone responsible for several sites. Alert recipients are set at handover and can be changed as staff change.

Generator installation

Priced against the sized unit and the installation work, confirmed after the load assessment. Servicing existing generators is quoted per visit.

The generator carries the manufacturer warranty, and routine servicing, oil changes, filters and a load test, is what keeps a standby unit reliable when you actually need it, since a generator that has not run in months is the one most likely to fail on the day it matters. Call the support line to schedule servicing or report a unit that will not start.

Solar backup power systems

Priced per system, sized to your consumption at the site assessment. Battery storage capacity is the main driver of the figure.

Panels and batteries carry the manufacturer warranty, batteries typically for a shorter period than panels, since a battery degrades with charge cycles in a way a panel does not. Monitoring lets you and us see system performance from your phone, so a drop in output is often caught before you notice it yourself. Call the support line for a system underperforming or a battery not holding charge.

Backup batteries and UPS systems

Priced against the load list and the run time you need, confirmed before installation.

UPS units and their batteries carry the manufacturer warranty. The battery inside a UPS is a wear item and loses capacity over years of use even if the mains never fails, which we flag at handover so a shortening run time is expected rather than treated as a fault. Call the support line for a unit not switching over, or a run time that has dropped noticeably.

Generator fuel management and monitoring

Quoted per tank after the survey. Tank shape and material determine which sensor suits, and calibration matters more than the hardware - an uncalibrated sensor on an irregular tank reports confidently wrong numbers. Sites with several generators are quoted together, since the reporting is shared.

Sensors are calibrated against the tank rather than assumed from its stated capacity, and recalibration is part of servicing. Alerts are tested at handover so you know they arrive. Where readings start to look implausible, that is a support call - a monitoring system nobody trusts is one people stop reading, which defeats the point of installing it.
